Are you having office issues? Perhaps you don’t get along with your boss or you are having issues with a co-worker. You should go to the HR department to resolve the issue, right? Not so fast!

Yes, human resources are in place to help employees with work-related issues and grievances, but HR is not a referee between you and other employees. It is set up to mitigate real office issues, not petty arguments.

So, before you rush down to HR to file a complaint, make sure it is legitimate and you have an issue with which HR solutions can actually assist you.

1. When you don’t get along with a co-worker or boss

Not everyone is going to get along with each other. Even at work. So, if you are not getting along with someone on your team—or even your boss—it doesn’t mean you should go to HR about it.

2. You disagree with your boss’s management style or strategy

People disagree with their boss all the time. They disagree with their management approach and they often disagree with their management strategy. But this doesn’t mean it’s wrong or needs to be addressed by HR. It’s a difference of opinion, not an HR issue.

3. Personal issues are not office issues

This can be a fine line. Yes, human resources is there to help you, and they can help you with some personal issues. But before you go to HR solutions, think about whether or not your personal issue is impacting your work. Perhaps you can get help through a wellness account or through your benefits. Look into these options first.

4. When you haven’t tried to find a solution first

Attempting to find a solution yourself first is important. One of the first questions HR will ask is, “What have you tried to do to solve the problem?” If you answer “nothing,” you won’t get much sympathy from HR.

5. When you haven’t looked into the issue

Before going to HR with any issue, it’s important to look into it. Look at the employee handbook, look on the company website, or speak with a trusted co-worker about the issue and your options. You may not have a case.

All human resources departments are different. Know what your specific HR department can help you with and which issues you should deal with yourself.
